Art, Mystery, the Sacred
Why do we even want to paint?
What actually pulls us to do it? And how do we fulfil that desire?
Not from the technical standpoint. That of course is important too.
But rather I want to share ideas more about the inner journey to being an artist.
This is a 4 minute clip from a talk I gave a few months ago.

Exploring your resonance with the world
Просмотров 13 тыс.2 дня назад
We each have a unique voice. You want to express it. And we, in fact, want to hear it. We want that in our paintings and painting practice, too. As important as learning technical skills is, so is the courage to listen to and give birth to your unique voice. This is a short 4-minute video clip from a talk on just this point and how it relates to your painting practice.

    I bought some gold leaf (the fake stuff) to add gold to my paintings. I like the paintings of Christ and the Saints in which they all have halos, and everything is lit up with gold leaf. Sometimes I forget that I'm painting, and I meditate or pray. I don't believe I can instill my paintings with miraculous powers. But I do like to think about the likelihood of miracles as I paint. I haven't yet applied the gold leaf, but I have drawn a design of a Nativity scene, and I'm hoping to send copies to family and friends as a Christmas card this year. Anyway, leaving my fears of having poor technique behind, it is sometimes nice to be quiet and to pray about things as I work. Thanks for the video. It just got me thinking.

    I spent three days on a painting I thought was going very well. I was so excited about it, thrilled I was finally getting values down. Yesterday, it started to go in a direction I wasn't thrilled with, turned it upside down, started repainting something totally different, which got my spirit excited again. Today, that started to fall apart, and I covered it yet again. Its an experience many know. I felt like I went through an exciting, yet exhausting, journey. Ups, downs, insightful breakthrough, then hit problems I don't have solutions for yet. I believe this is so good for all kinds of growth. Its okay when things are not working so you work around and try some other approach. I appreciate what you shared, it was so confirming. I have grown as a human being through each painting I attempt. Lessons about life, loving and God. What a great opportunity to experience, try out , some problem solving strategies My brain is mapping new connections. That, regardless of the quality of my work, or my ability to sell my work, or whether I get regonized for it, is priceless gift enough! I am an art warrior. Such a intensely personal topic that I don't think enough people really embrace. I have chronic pain I have to work through also. My hands don't work the way I want them to and it's frustrating, but the act itself of creating is an overcoming and a victory to my soul. Thank- you for being an inspiration!

    Hi Ian, I've Liked (👍) every video I've watched by you and learned a metric ton from them (MANY thanks, btw!!), but at 1:30, I politely disagree about the Age of Reason. I adore the Enlightenment for taking some giant steps out of the muck of superstition and oppression of the past. If I was forced to choose only one, I will happily give up mysticism every time in favor of the Enlightenment (since it gives me a much better chance at an existence in which I have the freedom to shape my own life rather than having it strictly controlled by the nobility and/or religious factions as I toil away in some form of widespread poverty). And lest you think I disagree just to be disagreeable, I look forward to your next video as always! 🙂

    An Artist passed by three men in a quarry. He asked The first “what are you doing“ he replied, I’m cutting stones to use for building. He asked the second “What are you doing” and received a reply “I am cutting stones to build a great cathedral that will be built here”. He asked the same of the third, who replied.“I am bringing people closer to God“. Is this what we might be doing as artists?

    a grain of sand, a smear of mud, a drop of water. if you have eyes to see. i worked at an auto plant many years ago. attaching fenders, placing batteries, and screwing door knobs. the sacred is in the viewer not the object viewed. it's how our minds file, sort, and enumerate that some put in the sacred place. if you put an unwanted baby in a crib and only feed it when necessary, the baby will not develop a sacred. sacred is a place for the "feels". maybe an isolated tribe of hunter-gatherers in S.A. that has no concept of sacred has developed a mind where every thought thing is stored as part of the whole.

    Very cool change of perspective from the technical to the spiritual. I don’t make art because I can but because I must to remain whole and healthy. I’m not an artist because I paint, I paint because I’m an artist. Art is my spiritual practice.

    Ian, are you a freemason? In this episode you sound a lot like a Bro :) I joined freemasonry (partly) because of my interest in golden mean and sacred geometry. As an oil painter i have learned many things from masonry, which resonate philosophically with the practice of painting :) Thank you for this episode, pure chocolate for brain - a very good start for a day in studio :)

    Just looked up sacred and the Google definition says holy or connected with God. So can't agree with your thoughts on this - the last thing I want is for art to be thought to be connected with something I don't believe in!

    • @IanRobertsMasteringComposition
      @IanRobertsMasteringComposition 5 дней назад

      Hi John. the root of sacred is to sanctify. The idea of the sacred being related to God is from the 17th century. The original idea goes more to the idea of our inner voice, our source awareness. Whether that is related to God or not is personal I think.

    • @johncowburn4444
      @johncowburn4444 4 дня назад

      Thanks Ian, I stand corrected. I'm afraid though that when I'm painting, my inner voice doesn't get much of a look in, I'm just trying my best to produce something that looks reasonably OK!

    • @claudiamanta1943
      @claudiamanta1943 4 дня назад

      @@IanRobertsMasteringCompositionNo, Ian. Sacredness does not originate in the ape mind. The Sacred is not a sublimation of wanting to kill or fuck another ape, and Sacredness is not a skilled whim. Everything IS sacred. The idea has been all along to live Life as a work of art, creating even more Beauty and Awe with sacred materials, thus partaking in the Creation.
